Bad Weather on Your Wedding Day: What One Minnesota Couple Did Right
If you’re planning a wedding in Minnesota, chances are the weather has crossed your mind at least once, maybe even more than once. Rain, wind, sudden storms… it’s one of the biggest anxieties couples carry into their wedding day.
Charlie and Kristin’s September wedding near Mankato is the perfect example of why how you respond to the weather matters far more than the forecast itself.
A September Wedding Near Mankato, Minnesota
Charlie and Kristin were married in September of 2025 at Chankaska Creek Ranch, Winery, & Distillery, just outside of Mankato, Minnesota. Early fall weddings in this area are usually beautiful — warm sun, soft light, and vineyard views.
And at the start of the day? That’s exactly what they had.
The morning began with the ladies getting ready at an Airbnb in Mankato, sunlight pouring through the windows. House of Hair Co. handled hair, and Rachel Dawn Artistry was there for makeup — both of which, importantly, held up incredibly well all day long.
At that point, rain wasn’t in the forecast. It wasn’t even on anyone’s radar.
When the Weather Shifted (and No One Panicked)
Once the wedding party arrived at the winery and started getting dressed, Charlie and Kristin were just minutes away from their first look. As Kristin’s mom zipped her into her dress, she glanced out the window and noticed a light rain starting.
We all laughed. Made the usual “rain is a good sign” comments. The plan was simple: wait a few minutes and push the first look back slightly so they could still have it outside, just like they wanted.
And that’s exactly what happened.
The brief shower passed, we headed outside, and Charlie and Kristin shared a beautiful first look followed by a private vow moment. By the time family and wedding party photos began, the sun was back out and everything felt calm again.
Rain? Forgotten.
A Downpour During the Ceremony + Pure Joy
The outdoor ceremony space at the winery was glowing. Sun streamed through the space, lighting up the hydrangeas lining the aisle. As the ceremony began, clouds rolled in and the light softened — still beautiful, still calm.
And then, just before Charlie and Kristin exchanged rings, a full downpour started.
This is the moment where a wedding day can shift in either direction.
Some guests scrambled for cover. Programs went over heads. Kristin’s brother ran to shield his wife with his coat.
Charlie and Kristin? They held hands. They cried happy tears. They looked at each other with complete joy and presence as they said their vows and became husband and wife.
They didn’t rush. They didn’t panic. They didn’t stop being present.
At one point, while it was still raining, the sun broke through again — creating the most beautiful, dramatic light. By the time the ceremony ended, the rain had stopped, but the ground was muddy everywhere.
And still — not a stressed bride or groom in sight.
What Charlie & Kristin Did Right (and Why It Matters)
This is the part every couple should read carefully.
Here’s what made their day work so beautifully, despite the weather:
- They stayed flexible instead of fixated on “perfect”
- They trusted their vendors to adjust the plan as needed
- They prioritized moments over appearances
- They let go of keeping everything clean and controlled
- They stayed emotionally present with each other
Kristin’s dress was muddy. Her shoes were muddy. And she truly didn’t care — because she was too busy being married.
That mindset changed everything.
Why Their Photos Are So Powerful
From a photography perspective, weather like this often creates some of the most meaningful images. Overcast skies soften light. Rain heightens emotion. Unplanned moments create real connection.
Because Charlie and Kristin leaned into the day instead of fighting it, their photos feel genuine, joyful, and alive. Nothing feels stiff or forced — and that’s something you can’t plan, no matter how perfect the forecast looks.
A Photographer’s Perspective on Bad Weather Wedding Days
As a wedding photographer, I plan for weather — always. Timelines are built with flexibility, backup options are considered, and moments are never rushed.
What matters most isn’t avoiding rain. It’s creating space for couples to stay present, grounded, and connected no matter what the day brings.
Charlie and Kristin’s wedding was a perfect reminder that joy breeds joy. Your family and friends feed off your energy — and when you lead with calm and gratitude, the entire day follows.
One Last Thing for Couples Worried About the Weather
You don’t need a flawless forecast to have a meaningful wedding day.
You need trust, flexibility, and the willingness to embrace the moments as they unfold.
If you’re planning a Minnesota wedding and want a photographer who stays calm, prepared, and focused on what actually matters — even when the weather doesn’t cooperate — I’d love to connect.
